With Spring right around the corner, future vacationers far and wide are sitting at their desks eagerly awaiting the second when they can turn in their laptops for sun rays and sandy beaches. We are excited too but don’t stamp your ticket just yet!! Before you head out for some well-deserved time off, there are some important things to keep in mind. Here are some simple tasks to keep yourself and your home safe while traveling!

  1. Copy and Update Necessary Documents – Photocopy your passport! Even If you have a digital copy, it’s good to always have a paper copy on hand just in case.
  2. Notify your Credit Card Company – There is nothing worse than being stuck on vacation with no money because your credit card company suspects fraud. Set up a travel notice or notify your company ahead of time to ensure there is no problem using your card. Also, keep emergency cash on hand to use in case your card gets lost or stolen.
  3. Adjust Thermostat – Save money on heat or AC by adjusting your home thermostat accordingly. Be sure not to turn off the AC or Heat completely as it circulates air through the home and helps to prevent mold and mildew. A good gauge to keep your thermostat at while you’re away is no cooler than 54 degrees and no warmer than 80 degrees.
  4. Turn off Water – Nothing ruins a perfect vacation than coming home to a flooded home. Leaks can happen, and having one happen while you’re away can cause serious damage to your home. Consider turning off your main water supply if your trip is going to be a week or longer. If a leak does happen, your homeowners or renters insurance should cover the water damage.
  5. Unplug – Make sure all appliances are unplugged. Not only will this conserve energy, but it will prevent any potential electrical fires or accidents that can take place due to overheating.
  6. Neighborly Check-ins – While you’re away have a trusted neighbor come in and check on your home. This is a good way to insure there is a second set of eyes on your home while you are away. Simple tasks like bringing up the garbage cans and taking in the mail can also be taken care of this way.
  7. Check your insurance! – Before you leave, check up on your insurance policy. Knowing what your policy covers could save you time and money if something does happen while you’re away. Also, find out what parts of your coverage extend out of the country. Did you know that your U.S. car insurance policy is valid in Canada as well? It’s a good idea to become aware of these benefits before you leave.
