When we’re out enjoying ourselves there are times when we’re thinking about having fun more than we think about our own safety. This not only goes for the adults, but it goes for children as well! If you’re one of those families that enjoys taking bike rides or even if you enjoy riding solo, then you may want to consider some of the following safety tips in order to reduce your risk for injury this summer.

Always wear a helmet. We know this is an obvious tip, but you’d be surprised how many people often ride without a helmet! Make sure that you’re taking that with you whenever you get on your bicycle and also make sure that it’s fitted properly. You wouldn’t want it to fall off half-way through, this especially goes for children that are planning to ride as well.

Stay visible! Make sure you’re wearing clothing that is visible when you go out. You want to make sure that drivers and other cyclists can see you to avoid any type of accident. Make sure that you’re using reflectors and lights when the sun starts to set or when it’s night time. Avoid letting your children go out at night to ride their bicycle unless accompanied by an adult.

Use your signals and always keep an eye out. Make sure that you’re using the proper signals to turn if you’re driving on the road. You want to make sure that the drivers are aware of where you’re planning to turn in order to avoid an accident. Once you’ve signalled then be sure to look again to make sure they saw you.

Do not act like a car. Don’t weave in and out of traffic. That can distract other drivers on the road and potentially lead to an accident. Check for traffic around you and be aware of all other surroundings. This is also true for children, make sure that you’re teaching them to keep away from the flow of traffic and always accompany them on busy streets/roads.

Do a quick bicycle check. This is for both you and any child that might be planning to ride, but make sure that you’re checking your bicycle! Check the brakes to make sure they’re working properly and also make sure that you’re adjusting the seat to a proper height. You never want to ride a bicycle with brakes that aren’t working.

These are just some quick tips to stay safe out there this summer. We want you and your family to be protected and safe no matter what. Check out some of these other safety tips when you get a chance and be cautious out there this summer!
